What personal data we collect and why we collect it

When you access this website, information of a general nature is automatically collected. This information is recorded in server log files and includes the type of web browser, the operating system used, the domain name of your Internet service provider, your IP address and similar data.

This is done for the following reasons:

  • Ensuring a smooth connection to the website
  • Ensuring a seamless use of our website
  • Evaluating system security and stability
  • For other administrative purposes

Your data is not used to draw conclusions about your person. Information of this kind is only evaluated statistically in order to optimise our website and the underlying technology.

Storage duration

The data is deleted as soon as it is no longer required for the purpose for which it was collected. For data that serves the provision of the website, this is generally the case when the respective session has ended.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the website, we collect the data shown in the comment form, as well as the visitor's IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to check whether you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you are a registered user and upload photos to this website, you should avoid uploading photos with EXIF GPS location data. Visitors to this website could download photos stored on this website and extract their location information.

Contact forms

The data you enter is stored for the purpose of individual communication with you. This requires a valid email address and your name. These are used to assign and subsequently respond to your enquiry. Providing additional data is optional.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our website, you may opt in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. This is a convenience feature so that you do not have to re-enter all this data when you write another comment. These cookies are stored for one year.

If you have an account and log in to this website, we will set a temporary cookie to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will set up several cookies to save your login information and display options. Login cookies expire after two days, and cookies for display options expire after one year. If you select "Remember Me" when logging in, your login will persist for two weeks. When you log out of your account, the login cookies will be deleted.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie contains no personal data and simply refers to the post ID of the article you have just edited. The cookie expires after one day.

Use of script libraries (Google Web Fonts)

In order to display our content correctly and in a graphically appealing way across browsers, we use "Google Web Fonts" by Google LLC (1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA; hereinafter "Google") on this website for the display of fonts.

The privacy policy of the library operator Google can be found here: https://www.google.com/policies/privacy/

Embedded content from other websites

Posts on this website may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in exactly the same way as if the visitor had visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking services and record your interaction with this embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Use of Google Analytics

This website uses Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA (hereinafter: "Google"). Google Analytics uses so-called "cookies", i.e. text files that are stored on your computer and enable an analysis of your use of the website. The information generated by the cookie about your use of this website is usually transferred to a Google server in the USA and stored there. Due to the activation of IP anonymisation on these websites, your IP address will be truncated by Google within member states of the European Union or in other contracting states of the Agreement on the European Economic Area beforehand. Only in exceptional cases will the full IP address be transferred to a Google server in the USA and truncated there. On behalf of the operator of this website, Google will use this information to evaluate your use of the website, to compile reports on website activity and to provide other services related to website and internet use to the website operator. The IP address transmitted by your browser as part of Google Analytics will not be merged with other Google data.

The purposes of data processing are the evaluation of the use of the website and the compilation of reports on activities on the website. Based on the use of the website and the internet, further related services shall then be provided.

Privacy policy for the use of Twitter

Functions of the Twitter service are integrated on our pages. These functions are offered by Twitter Inc., 795 Folsom St., Suite 600, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA. By using Twitter and the "Re-Tweet" function, the websites you visit are linked to your Twitter account and made known to other users. In doing so, data such as IP address, browser type, domains accessed, pages visited, mobile phone provider, device and application IDs and search terms are transmitted to Twitter.

We would like to point out that, as the provider of the pages, we have no knowledge of the content of the transmitted data or its use by Twitter. Due to ongoing updates to Twitter's privacy policy, we refer to the most recent version at http://twitter.com/privacy.

You can change your privacy settings on Twitter in your account settings at http://twitter.com/account/settings. If you have any questions, please contact privacy@twitter.com.

Privacy policy for the use of Google AdSense

This website uses Google AdSense, a service for embedding advertisements by Google Inc. ("Google"). Google AdSense uses so-called "cookies", text files that are stored on your computer and enable an analysis of the use of the website. Google AdSense also uses so-called web beacons (invisible graphics). Through these web beacons, information such as visitor traffic on these pages can be evaluated.

The information generated by cookies and web beacons about the use of this website (including your IP address) and the delivery of advertising formats is transmitted to a Google server in the USA and stored there. This information may be passed on by Google to Google's contractual partners. However, Google will not merge your IP address with other data stored by you.

You can prevent the installation of cookies by adjusting your browser software accordingly; however, we would like to point out that in this case you may not be able to use all functions of this website to their full extent. By using this website, you consent to the processing of data collected about you by Google in the manner and for the purpose described above.

Privacy policy for the use of Google +1

Using the Google +1 button, you can publish information worldwide. Via the Google +1 button, you and other users receive personalised content from Google and its partners. Google stores both the information that you have given +1 for a piece of content and information about the page you viewed when you clicked on +1. Your +1s may be displayed as hints together with your profile name and photo in Google services, such as in search results or in your Google profile, or in other places on websites and advertisements on the internet.

Google records information about your +1 activities to improve Google services for you and others.

In order to use the Google +1 button, you need a globally visible, public Google profile that must contain at least the name chosen for the profile. This name is used across all Google services. In some cases, this name may also replace another name you used when sharing content via your Google account. The identity of your Google profile may be shown to users who know your email address or have other identifying information about you.

In addition to the uses explained above, the information you provide will be used in accordance with the applicable Google privacy policy (http://www.google.com/intl/de/policies/privacy/). Google may publish aggregated statistics about users' +1 activities or share these statistics with our users and partners, such as publishers, advertisers or affiliated websites.

Use of Google Maps

On this website we use Google Maps. Google Maps is operated by Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA (hereinafter "Google"). This allows us to display interactive maps directly on the website and enables you to conveniently use the map function.

For more information about data processing by Google, please refer to Google's privacy notices. There you can also change your personal privacy settings in the privacy centre.

Embedded YouTube videos

On some of our web pages we embed YouTube videos. The operator of the corresponding plugins is YouTube, LLC, 901 Cherry Ave., San Bruno, CA 94066, USA (hereinafter "YouTube"). When you visit a page with the YouTube plugin, a connection to YouTube servers is established. YouTube is informed about which pages you visit. If you are logged into your YouTube account, YouTube can associate your browsing behaviour with you personally. You can prevent this by logging out of your YouTube account beforehand.

When a YouTube video is started, the provider uses cookies that collect information about user behaviour.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profiles. All users can see, edit or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit this information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this website or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Social plugins

Social media plugins are used on our web pages. Through these plugins, information, which may include personal data, may be sent to the service provider and potentially used by them. We prevent the unconscious and unwanted collection and transfer of data to the service provider through a 2-click solution. To activate a desired social plugin, it must first be activated by clicking on the corresponding button. Only through this activation of the plugin is the collection of information and its transfer to the service provider triggered. We do not collect any personal data ourselves through the social plugins or through their use.

We have no influence on what data an activated plugin collects and how it is used by the provider. Currently, it must be assumed that a direct connection to the provider's services is established and that at least the IP address and device-related information is collected and used. There is also the possibility that the service providers attempt to store cookies on the computer used. Please refer to the privacy notices of the respective service provider for details on what specific data is collected and how it is used. If you are logged into Facebook at the same time, Facebook can identify you as a visitor to a specific page.

Google AdWords

Our website uses Google conversion tracking. The operating company of the Google AdWords services is Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA. If you have reached our website via a Google advertisement, Google AdWords will set a cookie on your computer. The conversion tracking cookie is set when a user clicks on a Google advertisement.

If the user visits certain pages of our website and the cookie has not yet expired, we and Google can recognise that the user clicked on the advertisement and was redirected to this page. Each Google AdWords customer receives a different cookie. Cookies therefore cannot be tracked across AdWords customers' websites. The information collected using the conversion cookie is used to generate conversion statistics for AdWords customers who have opted for conversion tracking. Customers learn the total number of users who clicked on their advertisement and were redirected to a page with a conversion tracking tag. However, they do not receive any information that could be used to personally identify users.

How we protect your data

We may amend this privacy policy at any time without prior notice. The current version published on our website shall apply.
